Panama Turtle Protection

Continuing with our policy of preserving wild life and nature while ensuring sustainability in our ecologically driven developments, Crownland, as one of the leading companies in Panama buying beaches with a purpose wider than only making profit, has initiated the Panama Turtle Protection Group, an organization based in Panama City, focused in protecting sea turtles and the habitats upon which they depend.

To achieve its mission, the Panama Turtle Protection Group uses habitat protection, public education, community outreach, networking and advocacy as its basic tools. These tools are applied in both, international and domestic programs focusing on geographic areas that are globally important to sea turtle survival.

It is the mission of the Panama Turtle Protection Group to ensure the survival of sea turtles within the Wider Caribbean basin and Atlantic; our ambitious and essential program for turtle conservation stretches along a wide length of Panamanian coasts. Turtles are one of the world’s most endangered species, and the Panamanian coast is a key nesting ground that requires protection. The Panama Turtle Protection Group offers an exciting opportunity to be instrumental in the long term survival of various turtle species.

The turtles we are working to conserve are listed as internationally, protected, endangered species. Worldwide population estimates indicate a huge decline in numbers of leatherbacks, between 1980 and 1995. This decline is attributed to a number of factors including, loss of nesting habitats, destruction of nests by poachers, ingestion of marine debris, propeller wounds, and death through modern commercial fishing practices.

Sea turtles are among the largest living reptiles. Most species have scales and a bony shell and all species are cold blooded, breathe air, and lay their eggs on land. Sea turtles are found throughout the world in temperate and tropical waters, four species of sea turtles nest on Panamanian beaches or are found in Panamanian waters.

How You Can Help

There are many things each of us can do to help sea turtles survive. First, we must remember that we share the oceans and the beaches with many other species. Second, become informed about the things that are killing sea turtles or destroying their habitat. Elected officials and other leaders are making decision on issues that affect sea turtles almost every day. As an informed citizen, you have the power to influence the outcome of these issues by making your voice heard. Each year thousands of hatchling turtles emerge from their nests along the southeast U.S. coast and enter the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, only an estimated one in 1,000 to 10,000 will survive to adulthood. The natural obstacles faced by young and adult sea turtles are staggering, but it is the increasing threats caused by humans that are driving them to extinction.

Today, all sea turtles found in U.S. waters are federally listed as endangered, except for the loggerhead which is listed as threatened.

A turtle alive is worth more than a dead turtle !
